My complaint is about open-mindedness when it comes to embracing differing cultures and upbringings. Today more than ever, open-mindedness is important and necessary for people to unite, and we are often bombarded with extreme hatred or rejection for anything, down to favorite colors. This is even more necessary when it comes to upbringings and cultures. During WWII, there was extreme division in peoples' cultures. Thinking about people who were children during that time, how did that affect their opinions on other people, and how has that shifted or evolved to the current day? My grandmother is an example of someone who has grown to have an open mind, after her upbringing during WWII in China. She grew up during the war and moved between England, China, and India during that time. I have gotten to know her in recent years, far after her time living and growing up in China, and she has learned a lot about herself, and other people in those years. For some time, my grandmother was wary of Japanese people because of her experiences in China during Japanese occupation. However, post WWII, her mind opened significantly, as she got to meet people from different upbringings and not in the environment of wartime. The photographs in my collage combine family photographs from my grandmother, photographs I took while in Japan, and an art piece that was a collage-style project made with photographs from my time in Japan. I don't know as much about my grandma's history as I do about my family in Japan, so I would like to delve into it and learn more about her experiences. I want to connect all aspects of my interests and family history in Asia for my capstone.

below are also a few pieces that i made based off of my experiences in japan, including my family members. i want to apply this to my current works as it connects to my grandmother's upbringing.
